“World War III: A Cure For The Capitalist Head Cold”
By: Andy McGee, Guest Columnist
As I absorb all of the information that I can in this sensationalized era of war and incompetence, I am constantly thinking, as are most vigilant Americans, about what we can do to fix the situation that we find ourselves in. We have just seen the better part of 2 million jobs lost in 2008, and by the look of it, things are not going to get any better in 2009. Furthermore, I don’t see a solution so large in scale (and far reaching in scope) that it could dent this economic, unemployment, terror-filled, apathetic quagmire that we are all sloshing through together.
Then it hit me: World War!
Not very palatable, I know. I mean the whole Einstein “sticks and stones thing,” not to mention I have always been completely opposed to using military force unless there are no other options on the table. But if I am being honest with myself (and I am), I see the “powers that be” creating a massive vacuum for a potential World War III out of the current state of the world.
Let me ask you this: what event pulled us out of the Great Depression? The answer is World War II. Now, I am nowhere near the history aficionado that my friends here at ‘The Quill’ are, but I am certain they could cite several other times in history where a war was used as the means to deliver a society out of the mouth of their own destruction.
What would happen if we continue to print money, end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and attempt to continue capitalism here in the United States?
My guess is that many states and federal programs will go broke, therefore discontinuing assistance to those in need. Jobs will continue to dwindle, and more and more middle class workers will slip into the purgatory between panhandler and handyman. Crime will skyrocket, corruption will run amuck, the innocent will become the scapegoats, and the ‘proles’ (as Orwell referred to them in 1984) will constantly be running from place to place avoiding the ‘cutters.’
Or we could try the alternative. We use the current, and seemingly eternal enemy of the world, the terrorists, to justify an all-out battle on both sides of the globe. Major powers will draw sides and the arms race that has been going on for decades will start ticking down to the peace treaty that only a desperate nation can sign. In this “new world,” dramatic concessions once thought impossible would be an afterthought. Radical calls to eliminate debt would be considered patriotic duties, and faith based organizations would flourish as they opened their arms to give thanks for 100 more years of deliverance from tyranny and war.
I may be way off base here, but when I look at what we are facing, I can’t help but think that if we have truly learned anything from history then we all might need to lace up our boots and do a few sit ups. Left, right, left…

Historically speaking, this is dead on. Obviously written in a cynical/sarcastic tone, let us hope this is not our future…
