“California Has Spoken: An Open Letter To Governor Schwarzenegger”
By: John Liebner, Guest Columnist
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger,
While Proposition 8 is clearly generating passion on both sides of the political aisle, the fact of our governing principles is that the people of California have voted (and have spoken in majority) to protect the legal definition of marriage.
What is clear is that those who oppose the Amendment show evidence of their disinterest for ‘national unity,’ and interest in ‘individualism.’ The Constitution is not a document that guarantees the right of an individual to do as he or she pleases, but within a context of sound principles, it provides wide latitude of responsible freedom for those who use it lawfully.
Please take a stand on law, and the process of American government, by allowing it to work ‘by’ and ‘for’ the people…not through an activist judicial philosophy. I implore you to take a stand for those Americans who are submitting to constitutional process. Likewise, I ask you to stand against those who are resorting to behaviors that are intended to force their will at the expense of the balance of power that protects this country from anarchy, and the intimidating rule of totalitarianism.
The people have spoken. As a result, law-abiding citizens will not resort to violent protest in the streets; they will not threaten the well being of their American brothers and sisters. Yet, some others will. You are either allowing this intimidation to buckle your character by sitting idle, or you are in disagreement with the founding principles of this great nation. Regardless, you must not abandon the cause of those who voted with the majority, which in this case is in harmony with our Constitution.
To abandon the will of the people is a travesty to your elected and sworn duty, and will in turn send the message that the only way to be heard is through force and intimidation. Lawful people will not resort to such reckless abandon, as they are bound to the law because they are in support of a pre-established process. Others will rise up because they are receiving the ‘validation of silence’ on the part of fair-weather politicians.
What philosophy do you wish to advocate by virtue of your leadership, anarchy or peace? Please support the vocal majority. Do not let the courts manipulate the will of the people. Please fulfill your responsibility and publicly condemn the assault on First Amendment rights, and the right to have voted one’s conscience by speaking against the destructive protests taking place.
Sincerely,
John Liebner
